What is your relationship with Spirit like?
A lot of ‘spiritual’ and ‘healer’ communities do a shit job of building true relationships with spirit.
IF you have a spirit guide or deity that you work with and you aren’t learning everything about them, you aren’t truly working with them, you are making them work for you.
I love Kali, she is one of my original twelve that chose me, I am very grateful that she did. I know so much about her. I know her stories that were written by men and made her out to be something to be feared and controlled. I know her stories that she tells me herself, that paint a different picture entirely.
I know not everyone gets to have a two-way communication with their guides as freely as I do because I can channel them directly.
But no matter the level of ability, there is always a conversation being had, whether through
signs from them and asks by you,
songs you are singing that magically pop in your head and have meaning,
or doing mediations where you invite them in.
It is all a relationship being built.
There are beautiful ways of connecting with them that build a healthy and supportive relationship.
Ancestors: you can ask family members for stories about your history, you can learn where your ancestors are from and do research about what life was like there, explore traditions and folklore were prominent at that time, place a photo or keepsake of theirs or an object that has meaning to you that you connect to them on an altar (anywhere that is a meaningful spot), and you can talk to them as if they can hear you (because they can!)
Spirit Guides: guides that aren’t genetic family, but may be soul family, angels, fairies, animal guides, healer and helper spirits etc. Research them, explore who they are and what their specialties are (your animal spirit guide might be a Bear, what does that mean?) and if they have an abundance of specialties - you can ask them to show you how they want to work with you!
Deities: Gods/Goddesses. Ascended Masters. Beings that have been written about and worked with for ages. Whether from a religion that you grew up with or one that is new to you, if there is a deity that you are drawn to, its usually for a reason. Like Kali, Buddha, Quan Yin, Hekate, Gaia etc. The most important parts of working with them is to also honour their histories and the religious practices where they come from, to treat them with the reverence and respect they deserve and ensure that you are not appropriating cultural practices that aren’t meant for you.
When we work with these beings in a private and personal way, when we ask them to walk with us not carry us, when we talk to them with faith that they hear us, and when we put our energy into building our relationships with them, that’s when it becomes profoundly powerful.
So are you treating your relationship with your guides like a loving, reciprocal relationship or are you using them for your needs to be met and not putting anything into it?
